Ruk Rakaganno Hosts Gateway College Rajagiriya for an Educational & Awareness Program
On 5th September 2025, Ruk Rakaganno had the pleasure of welcoming a group of Advanced Level students and teachers from Gateway College Rajagiriya to its reforestation site at Suduwelipotha, for a special Educational and Awareness Program on Rainforests and Biodiversity.
A Unique Learning Experience in the Rainforest
Twenty students, accompanied by three teachers, were treated to a day of immersive learning in one of Sri Lanka’s most inspiring ecological reforestation sites. The program began with a warm welcome over a traditional village breakfast of Imbul Kiributh and steaming cups of tea served in coconut shells.
The formal session was opened by Dushy and Ashok, President and Board Member of Ruk Rakaganno, who introduced the importance of the program in the broader context of rainforest conservation.
Professor Mayuri Wijesinghe and her team from the Univercity of Colombo then delivered a comprehensive and engaging educational session. Using handouts, worksheets, and interactive discussions, students were guided through the significance of rainforests, their ecological role, biodiversity, and conservation challenges.

Field Activities and Hands-On Learning
Students were divided into groups and participated in three interactive field activities before proceeding to the planting area. Under the guidance of Mr. Rohan Pandiperuma, Site Manager of Ruk Rakaganno, forest saplings were prepared for planting, giving students the opportunity to actively contribute to reforestation efforts.
The activities included water sampling at two sites, with results later discussed by Professor Wijesinghe and the students on-site. These practical exercises not only strengthened their understanding of ecological processes but also highlighted the direct link between science and conservation.
The students, many of whom were experiencing an environment like Sinharaja for the first time, expressed great enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the activities.

Reflection and Closing
After three enriching hours in the field, the group returned to the base camp to enjoy a traditional village lunch. Feedback collected from students highlighted their appreciation for the knowledge gained and the memorable hands-on experience in a living rainforest landscape.
To mark their participation, certificates were awarded to all students. Ruk Rakaganno extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to Professor Wijesinghe and her dedicated team from the University of Colombo, as well as to Gateway College students and teachers for their active involvement.

A Step Forward in Ecological Education
The success of this program once again reaffirmed Ruk Rakaganno’s commitment to one of its key pillars—education for ecological reforestation. By inspiring young minds and equipping them with knowledge and experience, initiatives like this contribute meaningfully to building future generations of environmental stewards.
