Ruk Rakaganno Celebrates 50 Years of Caring for Sri Lanka’s Trees
Annual General Meeting – 27 October 2025
There was a warm and familiar buzz at Kithu Sevena, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, as members gathered for Ruk Rakaganno’s 50th Annual General Meeting. Nineteen dedicated members joined the event, including a special guest — Ranmal, daughter of our past president Mrs. Kamini Vitharana, visiting from the UK. It was a reminder of the strong and lasting bonds built over five decades of conservation .
A Year of Action & Growth
President Dushy Perera took us through a remarkable year of achievements — and there were many! From ambitious reforestation efforts at Sudawetapotha, to empowering Dry Zone communities through bee-keeping and honey production initiatives, the focus has been clear: create real incentives to protect nature.
Our now-beloved tree walks, which draw nature-lovers young and old, continue to build public appreciation for Sri Lanka’s priceless biodiversity.
Partnerships with Purpose
2025 strengthened our ties with environmentally responsible corporations and conservation partners. Support from major organisations like Dilmah, John Keells Group, and Deutsche Bank has helped amplify our mission. We also began a key collaboration with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, further expanding our impact through shared vision and action.
Golden Jubilee Milestone
A standout moment was the 50th Anniversary Celebration, held on World Environment Day (5 June) at Barfoot House. The event brought together members, partners, and our legendary founder Iranganie Serasinghe. It was a memorable night filled with inspiring environmental messages and deeply moving artistic performances — a true reflection of our roots and vision.
Good Governance & Strong Foundations
Secretary Prof. Shiranee Balasuriya presented a meticulous annual report, followed by Treasurer David Grenier, who confirmed that Ruk Rakaganno remains financially healthy and responsibly managed, meeting the highest standards required by corporate partners.
## A Voice for the Trees
Long-time member Ravi Algama, marking 45 years with Ruk Rakaganno, delivered a heartfelt talk titled “Standing Tall for the Trees That Stand Tall for Us.” He spoke passionately about the deep personal and environmental rewards of protecting trees and connecting with nature — a reminder of why we do what we do.
Fellowship & Sweet Endings
The AGM concluded with fellowship — conversation, laughter, and a lovely spread of refreshments. Special applause went to Shiranee for her delightful Ribbon cake, which quickly became the crowd favorite! It was the perfect sweet ending to a meaningful evening, marking 50 years of dedication and looking forward to the journey ahead.
Here’s to the Next 50 Years
Our AGM wasn’t just a meeting — it was a celebration of legacy, community, and hope. Together, we look forward to continuing our mission, planting more seeds — literal and figurative — and nurturing a greener Sri Lanka for generations to come.
Thank you to every member, partner, and supporter.
Let’s keep standing tall for the trees — because they stand tall for us.
